Can isopropyl alcohol damage acrylic?
The most important thing to understand before cleaning acrylic or plexiglass shields is to never use harmful solvents. Especially refrain from using alcohol such as methyl, ethyl, isopropanol, or acetone. Cleaning acrylic in this manner will lead to microfractures and cloudiness, compromising surface integrity.
Acrylic (the material of the Form 2 hood, and the resin trays) will crack when exposed to IPA.
- Any ammonia based cleaner e.g. window and glass cleaners.
- âAbrasive or caustic cleaners.
- WD-40 or any other petroleum-based chemical.
- âScrubbing pads or other abrasive pad.
These alcohols do not dissolve the plastics in large extent, like acetone often does, but they may corrupt surfaces, especially if they are shiny or polished. The typical case is compact polystyren or polymethylmethacrylate, that are often clear and shiny, where the white milky haze is very well visible.
Avoid ammonia-based products, like Windex or other home glass cleaners, because they contain harmful chemicals that will actually damage the surface leaving it cloudy looking. Soapy water is the safest and most effective cleaning solution for acrylic.
Thanks to its chemical resistance, PLEXIGLASÂź can be cleaned easily and is resistant to commercial cleaning agents. However, agents containing benzene, ethanol and other alcohols, organic materials or thinners are unsuitable. These can damage the brand acrylic glass.
When acrylics come into direct or indirect contact with harsh solvents, the liquid or fumes may cause a drying effect that stresses the material to the point where it becomes brittle and suddenly cracks and/or crazes. This is due to a chemical reaction occurring between the solvent and the acrylic.
Acrylic pour art may crack due to the consistency of the paint itself, this can happen if it is too thick or too thin. The best consistency is similar to cream or honey.
Use only a very soft damp cloth when cleaning acrylic surfaces. It is possible to scratch acrylic, so NEVER use any scouring compounds or chemical cleaners such as Windex or other glass cleaners (even if they are environmentally friendly, organic or non-scented).
Chemicals should never be used to clean acrylic since they will harm it. WD-40 also comes under the category of petroleum-based chemicals so you should avoid it.
Can you buff scratches out of acrylic?
Wet one piece of 600 grit sandpaper - run it over the scratched area in a circular motion and repeat with a dry piece of 600 grit sandpaper too. Rub with both wet and dry sandpapers for around 3 to 3 minutes. Don't worry if your acrylic looks more frosty or scratched - this will go away during the process.

However, rapid evaporation does have a downside in that the shelf life of this mixture is not as long as other IPA mixtures. Both the 70% & 99% mixtures are non corrosive to metals and are plastic safe too.
In short, PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PPS and PTFE are all suitable for storage of ethanol or isopropanol, the two most common hand sanitizing agents. Most travel cosmetics bottles or reused cosmetic/household bottles will be one of these.
Cleaning Method 1: Use an acrylic-safe cleaning product.
Some of the more popular brand names that are perfect to use include: Formula 409Âź All-Purpose Cleaner. DawnÂź Dish Soap (or Your Favorite Brand) CLRÂź Bath and Kitchen Cleaner.
Look for a cleaning solution made especially for plastic, such as Brillianize, and soft cotton microfiber cloths. It's important to use a product made for acrylic, because many household cleaners, such as Windex, 409, or Fantastik, will break down the material and make it look cloudy.
NEVER use vinegar-based products for cleaning acrylic. Just like glass cleaners, the acidic nature of vinegar will permanently damage your acrylic. A mild soap and water can be used as a natural way to clean acrylic.
Acrylic (PMMA) thermoplastic is notable for its clarity, long service life and UV resistance. It is resistant to most detergents, inorganic chemicals, aliphatic hydrocarbons, fats and oils, diluted acids and concentrated alkalis at room temperature.

Therefore, if you add very little silicone to your paint you will not get any cells. If your paint mix is too thick, the bubbles that form the cells will not be strong enough to rise to the surface and therefore get trapped at the bottom of the layers of paint.
You will get lots of big cells by adding both floetrol and silicone oil to your acrylic paint mix. When you pour this mixture onto a surface the cells will very quickly reveal themselves.
How to Reliably Create Cells in Your Acrylic Pour? The most reliable way to create cells in your acrylic paint pour is to use silicone or another oil additive. This will almost guarantee that you get cells in your fluid painting. We recommend that you try each of these different cell making techniques one by one.
Baking soda can remove hard dirt from the acrylic. For tough stains: First, fill the tub with hot water and vinegar. Allow this soaking mixture to stay for 15 minutes or more to loosen any mildew and scum, then drain the water. Use a damp cloth or sponge to scrub the baking soda into the tub and faucets.
Never use a dry cloth or your hand to clean your acrylic.
Then use a recommended cleaner to complete the job. Note: a mild solution of dish detergent and warm water takes off stubborn dirt easily without harming the acrylic and works as an excellent alternative, if you have run out of Novus #1 or Brillianize.
Wash on a gentle cycle with warm or cool water. You can also hand-wash your acrylic clothing, if desired. Lay Flat to DryâThough acrylic is relatively durable and resistant to abrasion, it may lose its shape or stretch if placed in the dryer.
Plexiglass is sensitive to ammonia, high pH, and products with Quaternary ammonium salts that will cause clouding or fogging. Always check your labels before using them on plexiglass. I've always found household dish soap works wonders. I've always preferred Dawn dish soap, but almost any will do.
What solvents can be used on acrylic?

Sanding and polishing acrylic sheet edges is recommended for achieving the best appearance, particularly after cutting it to size. This will smooth rough edges, remove scratches and will leave a glossy appearance.
Rubbing alcohol can damage finished surfaces (ones which are lacquered, varnished or treated) as well as fabrics like acetate or rayon. Do not use it as an antiseptic on wounds or skin conditions. It might be great for sterilising equipment, but it can delay healing and cause skin irritation.
To clean surfaces, both alone and as a component of a general-purpose cleaner, or as a solvent. 99% isopropyl alcohol has the benefit of being non-corrosive to metals or plastics, so it can be used widely, on all surfaces, and won't leave smears, even on glass or screens.

No â isopropyl alcohol and rubbing alcohol are not the same thing. Isopropyl alcohol is pure alcohol and is a colorless liquid with a musty, sharp odor. There are no other ingredients in a bottle of isopropyl alcohol. By contrast, rubbing alcohol contains isopropyl alcohol among other ingredients, such as water.
